EDOARDO DIONEA CICCONI | XYZT

Branciforte Palace, Cavallerizza’s Room, Palermo
Opening: 25 September 2021, 11.30 am
26 September – 17 October 2021

On the occasion of the tenth edition of the “Week of Cultures”, contemporary art
enters the museum spaces of Palazzo Branciforte in Palermo, renovated by the
architect Gae Aulenti with a masterful architectural recovery intervention.
The project is promoted by: Settimana delle Culture; Sicily Foundation; Sicily Art &
Culture, curated by Zerial Art Project, in collaboration with OUT srl and Verne
Soluzioni, presents Edoardo Dionea Cicconi’s solo show “XYZT”,
from Saturday 25 September to 17 October 2021, in the Cavallerizza’s Room of
Branciforte Palace.
The room, on the ground floor, includes the archeology collection with over 4,751
finds (prehistoric and protohistoric, Greek, Sicilian, Magna Graecia and indigenous
people from the archaic, classical and Hellenistic age), as well as architectural and
votive terracottas, bronzes, jewellery, glass and ivories. From the Roman period
are a two-faced herm and a commercial wine amphora recovered from the sea.
The artist’s installation merges with the archaeological collection, giving a noninvasive
solution of continuity to the room itself. The ancient finds dialogue with the
sculptures of Dionea Cicconi, reshuffling the cards of time and giving a new identity
(also chronological) to the Museum’s permanent exhibition. The sculptures are selfsupporting
metal structures with a mirrored surface on the front. The surface of the
mirror, straight and clear, has a particularity: at times it reflects reality, distorting it.
Through a hidden mechanism, the image distorts and then returns to its initial
appearance: it is the work that moves, catching the viewer, who is distorted until it
disappears and then reappears again.
Influenced by the studies of contemporary physics, Dionea Cicconi attempts to
establish a dialogue between the phases of time (past, present and future) and
their alterations. Spectators will be able to interact with the sculpture and, through a
game of reflections, also with the archaeological collection. In fact, surprisingly and
intermittently, the mirrors will distort the reflected reality: visitors will “disappear”
and merge with the surrounding space and with the finds themselves. The
spectator’s sensorial experience is also distorted by the stroboscopic light, which is
intended to symbolize the fragmentation of the continuum. Each flash is already a
fragment that is already a memory, a potential d j  vu. In this way the space-time
barrier is broken down, engulfed by mirrors. Like a sort of black hole, in which
everything is concentrated inside and in which, even today, we don’t know where
this totality ends up: a portal into the unknown in which everything is absolutely
relative.
